The Entrepreneurial Type Indicator (ETI)

About

Do You Know Yourself as an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship magnifies your "self." Every decision, risk, and partnership reflects what you believe about value, purpose, and control, yet most founders chase visions before they understand their own motives. Self-awareness turns trial and error into deliberate growth. It gives context to feedback, steadiness in failure, and clarity in success.

Entrepreneurship is always about creating something of value, but you have to create yourself first.

Why do more than 50% of businesses fail in their first 5 years?

Data from Forbes show: a significant number of fledgling entrepreneurs fail not from a lack of passion, but from a lack of self-awareness, leading to misaligned strategies, partnership friction, and personal burnout. The ETI is designed to prevent this before it starts, thanks to its proprietary framework for codifying, measuring, and understanding everyone's unique entrepreneurial drives, behaviors, and skillsets.

Without the ETI, you risk...

  • ❌ Misaligned Strategy: Wasting time and money pursuing tactics that conflict with your natural strengths, leading to slow progress and frustration.
  • ❌ Partnership Friction: Collaborating with people whose entrepreneurial styles fundamentally clash with yours, creating a foundation for conflict and failure.
  • ❌ Founder Burnout: Forcing yourself to operate in a way that goes against your core identity, leading to exhaustion, demotivation, and a loss of passion.

With the ETI, you gain...

  • ✅ Authentic Alignment: The clarity to build a business that aligns with your core drives, maximizing your effectiveness and personal fulfillment.
  • ✅ Strategic Collaboration: The insight to identify ideal partners who complement your style, creating a stronger, more resilient, and effective leadership team.
  • ✅ Sustainable Passion: The ability to lean into your natural strengths and mitigate your tensions, reducing friction and preventing the burnout that sinks many ventures.

How Does It Work?

Through a brief psychometric assessment, the ETI plots your identity as a gradient across four overarching types—Altruistic, Effective, Inventive, and Opportunistic. It then calculates your dominant and influencer types to determine which one of sixteen entrepreneurial subtypes you are. A, E, I, O . . . Where do "U" fit in? Find out at no cost right now!

In a Nutshell

While tools like MBTI, Enneagram, and StrengthsFinder offer valuable insights into general personality traits, they weren't designed for the unique challenges of entrepreneurship. The ETI is the only assessment specifically built for entrepreneurs—measuring not just who you are, but how you create value, make decisions under uncertainty, and partner effectively to build successful ventures.

Create on Common Ground

Partnerships work when people see the same landscape. The ETI gives partners a shared language for how each creates value and makes decisions. You spot natural overlaps, complementary gaps, and likely friction points before they become costly. Roles get clearer, expectations align, and conflict turns into coordination. Use it to choose the right fit and start strong.

Use Cases

See how the ETI helps entrepreneurs and teams make smarter decisions

Resolving Partnership Conflicts

When co-founders clash over strategy or priorities, the ETI reveals whether the friction stems from personality differences or misaligned roles. An Orchestrator focused on systems and a Visionary chasing new ideas can divide responsibilities more effectively once they understand each other's natural approach to building a business.

Vetting a Potential Co-founder

Before committing to a partnership, the ETI shows whether two entrepreneurs complement or duplicate each other's strengths. A Builder who thrives on execution paired with an Explorer who spots market gaps creates balance, while two Builders might compete for the same tasks and leave strategic gaps unfilled.

Finding the Right Partner Profile

Solopreneurs often assume they need a partner who thinks like them. The ETI's Ideal Partner Discovery feature identifies the entrepreneurial profiles that would fill capability gaps rather than echo existing strengths, helping founders recruit partners who expand what the business can accomplish.

Learn More about the Origins of the ETI

The ETI was created by a former Air Force Russian Cryptologic Linguist/Inteligence Analyst named Damian Niolet. Ultimately, Damian's entrepreneurial spirit lead him to separate from the Air Force, but it would take 10 years before he would begin seeing success as an entrepreneur, and it all started when he essentially gave up on ever being one.

Contact Damian
Damian Niolet as a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force (circa 2014) Overlapping water-ring stains on a tabletop were the impetus for the ETI Damian Niolet, Founder and President of The Start Squad Academy and Inventor of the Entrepreneurial Type Indicator (ETI)

Framing the Framework

Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, Damian has never had a shortage of ideas. After separating from the Air Force in 2015, however, his runway was very short. (Ironic pun intended.) He knew he needed to focus on just one venture, so he decided to build a decision framework to help narrow his attention. Having a master's of entrepreneurship, he understood the theory behind succeeding as an entrepreneur, but he wanted a practical tool that forced him to answer, "What can I accomplish today," rather than, "What do I want to accomplish in life?"

While outlining his thoughts at his dining room table, he noticed four overlapping rings from a water glass—a natural Venn diagram. Inspired, a visual dimension, complete with color-coding, was added into the framework. This process grounded him so well he shelved all his "good ideas," realizing they were too grandiose or not right for his current situation. Then he saw the framework itself as his best opportunity. A decade later those "water stains" have matured into the Entrepreneurial Type Indicator (ETI) and the Success Training in Entrepreneurship Program (STEP).

1. Introduction

Welcome to the Entrepreneurial Type Indicator ("ETI"). This Privacy Notice explains how The Start Squad Academy ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you visit our website https://www.entrepreneurialtypeindicator.com (the "Site") and use the ETI assessment, training hubs, and related services (collectively, the "Service").

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this notice. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Information We Collect

We collect several types of information to provide and improve our Service:

  • Account Information: When you register, we collect your email address, a securely hashed password, and your choice regarding receiving affiliate marketing offers (`consent_affiliates`). If you use a portal, we store that association (`portal_slug`).
  • Optional Profile Information: If you choose to provide it in your User Profile, we collect your First Name, Last Name, Role/Title, Organization/Company, Location, and Industry.
  • Assessment Data: Your answers to the ETI assessment questions and your calculated results, including subtypes, disciplines, leans, tensions, readiness profiles, and associated timestamps.
  • User Generated Content (Comments): We use Disqus to host comments on our training posts. When you post a comment, Disqus collects data (such as your IP address and login details) subject to Disqus's Privacy Policy. We have access to the comments you post and the public profile information associated with them.
  • Feedback Data: If you provide feedback, we collect your vote, optional ratings, and comments. If you consent to your feedback being used as a testimonial, we also require and collect your **First Name, Last Name/Initial, Role, Organization, and Location** for attribution.
  • Transaction Information (for ETI Pro / Training): We receive confirmation data from our payment processors (e.g., PayPal) to grant Pro access or training enrollment.
  • Contact Form / Support Ticket Data: When you use the "Contact Us" form, we collect and store your name, email address, message content, and IP address in our support ticket system to manage and respond to your inquiry.
  • Game Mode Data: When you play games (Guess Who?, Business Boo, Fantasy League), we collect your game scores, win/loss records, and timestamps. If you are logged in, this data is associated with your account. If you are not logged in, we generate an anonymous identifier stored in your browser's Local Storage to track your scores on leaderboards.
  • Leaderboard Information: If you appear on a game leaderboard, your display name (or "Anonymous" if not logged in) and score are publicly visible to other users. You can control your display name in your Account Profile.
  • Business Boo Partner Predictions: If you play "Do You Know Your Business Boo?", we store your prediction of a partner's entrepreneurial type, the unique link you share, and whether your prediction was correct. When your partner completes their assessment via your link, both results are connected to determine accuracy.
  • Badges and Achievements: We track your progress toward earning badges, including assessment completions, game wins, article reads, login streaks, feedback submissions, and account age. This activity data is stored with your account.
  • User Activity Data: To support features like login streak badges and article read tracking, we log certain activities (login timestamps, articles viewed) associated with your account.
  • Cookie Consent Preferences: We store your choice (e.g., accept or reject) regarding optional cookies in your browser's Local Storage.
  • Analytics Data (With Your Consent): If you provide consent, we use Google Analytics to collect anonymous data about your visit, such as pages viewed and session duration.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. However, we share data based on the partnership model associated with your account or global sponsorship agreements:

▶ A. Taking the Assessment

1. Getting Started

You can access the ETI assessment directly at entrepreneurialtypeindicator.com or through a partner institution's portal. The assessment works the same way regardless of how you arrive.

2. Starting as an Anonymous Visitor

You don't need an account to take the ETI. Simply click "Begin Assessment" on the home page. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and return later to continue where you left off.

3. Answering the Questions

The ETI consists of 48 questions that measure your entrepreneurial tendencies across four dimensions. For each question, read the statement carefully, select how strongly you agree or disagree, and remember there are no right or wrong answers—respond based on how you naturally think and act.

Tip: Answer based on your instincts rather than overthinking. Your first reaction is usually the most accurate.

4. Viewing Your Basic Results

After completing all questions, you'll immediately see your results including a radar chart plotting your scores, your dominant type, influencer types, and your unique entrepreneurial subtype (one of 16 possibilities).

5. Celebrity Entrepreneur Match

Based on your subtype, you'll see which famous entrepreneur shares your profile. This is for illustration purposes only—the match helps you quickly understand your type through a recognizable example.

6. Sharing Your Results

Click the "Share" button to post your results on social media. You can choose from three styles: Celebrity Doppelganger, Partner Search (Pro), or Sharing is Caring to invite others to take the assessment.

▶ B. Your Account

7. Why Create an Account?

While you can take the ETI without an account, creating one gives you permanently saved results, access to your personalized business roadmap, ability to upgrade to Pro, and access to training registrations.

8. Registration

Click "Create Account" and enter your email and password. You'll receive a verification email—click the link to confirm your address. Your anonymous assessment results (if any) will automatically connect to your new account.

9. Logging In

Click "Log In" in the top navigation and enter your credentials. Check "Remember me" to stay logged in across browser sessions.

10. Forgot Password

Click "Forgot password?" on the login form, enter your email, and check your inbox for a reset link. The link expires after 24 hours.

11. Connecting Anonymous Results

If you took the assessment before creating an account, your results are stored locally. When you create an account or log in, the system will prompt you to connect those results to your profile.

▶ C. Understanding Your Results

12. Reading the Radar Chart

The four-pointed chart plots your scores on each axis: Altruistic (service-oriented), Effective (mastery-focused), Inventive (innovation-driven), and Opportunistic (growth-focused). The further your score extends toward a corner, the stronger that tendency.

13. Confidence Score

This percentage indicates how consistently you answered questions. A higher score means your responses showed clear patterns; a lower score might indicate you're in a transitional phase or have a more balanced profile.

14. Ymehtic Score

This measures the internal consistency of your answers—essentially, how aligned your responses are with each other. It's a quality indicator for the assessment.

15. Dominant vs. Influencer Types

Your Dominant Type is your primary entrepreneurial drive. Your Influencer Types are secondary tendencies that modify and shape how your dominant type expresses itself.

16. The 16 Subtypes

Your subtype is expressed as a combination (e.g., "Altruistic + Inventive" or "A+I"). The first type is dominant; the second is your strongest influencer. Each of the 16 combinations has distinct characteristics.

17. Understanding "Tensions"

The ETI framework recognizes that certain business disciplines may feel unnatural based on your type. These tensions aren't weaknesses to fix—they're signals pointing you toward complementary partnerships.

▶ D. Pro Membership Features

18. What's Included in Pro

The Pro upgrade ($24.99 one-time) unlocks detailed analytics, Ideal Business Fit analysis, Ideal Collaborative Match (partner pairing), full roadmap instructions, and lifetime access to updates.

19. Purchasing Pro

Click the "Upgrade to Pro" button in your results or dashboard. You'll be directed to PayPal to complete the purchase. Once confirmed, Pro features unlock immediately.

20. Ideal Business Fit

This Pro feature analyzes your subtype against real business models and industries, showing which ventures naturally align with your entrepreneurial profile.

21. Ideal Collaborative Match

Based on the ETI framework's tension-resolution model, this feature identifies which subtypes would make ideal business partners—complementary types whose strengths cover your tensions.

22. The 256 Partner Combinations

With 16 subtypes, there are 256 possible partnership pairings. Pro members get detailed explanations of how their subtype interacts with every other type.

▶ E. Your Business Roadmap

23. The Three Phases

Your personalized roadmap is structured in three phases: Phase I - Launching (Problem-Solution Fit), Phase II - Accelerating (Product-Market Fit), and Phase III - Positioning (Market-Pivot Fit).

24. The Nine Steps

Each phase contains three steps that build on each other. The roadmap provides specific guidance tailored to your subtype.

25. The Four Business Disciplines

Every step addresses four color-coded disciplines: Operations & Logistics, Marketing & Retaining, Products & Services, and Legalizing & Accounting. The colors help identify which tasks might trigger your natural tensions.

26. Free vs. Pro Roadmap Access

Free users see the roadmap structure and task overview. Pro users get detailed instructions with real-world examples and implementation guidance for each step.

▶ F. Training Hub

27. Browsing Trainings

The Training Hub shows available training programs from Start Squad Academy (including Start Squad Academy programs) and partner institutions. Browse global trainings or programs specific to your portal.

28. Training Details

Click any training to see full details including schedule, pricing tiers, instructor information, prerequisites, and session dates.

29. Pricing Tiers

30. Registration

Click "Register Now" to begin. Enter your information and complete payment through PayPal. Confirmation emails are sent automatically.

31. Waitlists

If a training is full and waitlist is enabled, you can join the queue. When a spot opens, you'll receive an email with 48 hours to complete registration.

32. Blog Posts & Resources

The Training Hub also features educational articles, guides, and announcements that are free to access.

▶ G. Your Dashboard

33. Dashboard Tabs

Your dashboard has seven tabs: Badges (achievements earned), Results (saved assessments), Training (registrations), Readiness (situational questionnaire), Billing (transactions), Profile (personal info), and Settings (preferences).

34. Badges Tab

Badges are awarded for various activities like completing assessments, playing games, reading articles, and maintaining login streaks. See your earned badges with icons and descriptions, plus progress bars for badges you're working toward.

35. Viewing Saved Results

The Results tab shows every assessment you've completed with timestamps. Click any result to view it in detail. You can also delete historical results if needed.

36. Readiness Rating

The Readiness tab contains the Situational Questionnaire (SQ) that evaluates your current circumstances, experience, and resources for entrepreneurship. Your answers generate a Readiness Rating that appears in your results. Update this as your situation changes.

37. Managing Consent Settings

In Settings, control your analytics consent, affiliate sharing preferences, and testimonial consent.

38. Changing Email or Password

Use the Settings tab to update your login credentials. Email changes require re-verification.

39. Deleting Your Account

At the bottom of Settings, you can permanently delete your account. This removes all your data and cannot be undone.

▶ A. Getting Started

1. Admin Account Types

There are three admin roles with different permissions:

  • Enterprise Admin: Manages a single portal—can view users, grant Pro status, manage trainings, and see analytics for their portal only.
  • Sponsor Admin: Limited access for sponsoring organizations—can view sponsored content and basic analytics.
  • Developer Admin: Full platform access—can manage all portals, users, trainings, and system settings.

2. Logging into the Admin Panel

Navigate to /admin or click "Admin Dashboard" in the menu. Enter your credentials. If you're already logged in as a user, you'll be prompted to elevate to admin access.

3. Understanding Your Portal Assignment

Enterprise admins are assigned to a specific portal. All your actions are scoped to that portal—you can only see users, trainings, and analytics for your assigned portal.

4. Dashboard Overview

Your admin dashboard shows tabs for different functions. The available tabs depend on your role. Use the folder-style tabs to navigate between sections.

▶ B. User Management

5. Viewing Users in Your Portal

The Users tab shows all users registered through your portal. You'll see their email, name, Pro status, and registration date.

6. Understanding User Data Fields

Each user record includes: email address, first/last name, Pro membership status, portal assignment, account creation date, email verification status, and consent settings.

7. Granting/Revoking Pro Status

Click a user row to expand details. Use the "Grant Pro" or "Revoke Pro" button to change their Pro membership status. This is useful for providing Pro access to students or program participants.

8. Filtering and Searching Users

Use the search box to find users by email or name. Developer admins can also filter by portal assignment.

9. Privacy Boundaries

You can see user account information but not their assessment answers or detailed results. Individual assessment data is private to the user.

▶ C. Analytics Dashboard

10. Accessing Analytics

The Analytics tab displays a Looker Studio dashboard with aggregated, anonymized data for your portal.

11. Understanding Aggregated Metrics

Analytics show patterns across your user base, not individual results. This protects user privacy while giving you actionable insights.

12. Assessment Completion Rates

See how many users start vs. complete assessments. Low completion rates may indicate UX issues or unclear instructions.

13. Type Distribution

View the distribution of entrepreneurial types across your portal's users. This can inform how you structure programming and partner matching.

14. Time-Based Trends

Track registrations and completions over time to measure the impact of marketing efforts or program launches.

▶ D. Training Management

15. Creating New Trainings

In the Trainings tab, click "Create Training" to add a new workshop or program. Fill in the title, description, dates, and other details.

16. Training Fields

Required fields include title, description, delivery type (in-person, virtual, hybrid), start/end dates, capacity, and pricing. Optional fields include instructor name, prerequisites, and session schedule.

17. Managing Enrollment and Waitlists

Set a capacity limit and enable/disable waitlists. When capacity is reached, users can join the waitlist and receive notifications when spots open.

18. Viewing Registrations

The Registrations tab shows all users registered for your trainings with their payment status and registration date.

19. Requesting Global Visibility

By default, portal trainings are only visible to your portal's users. Check "Request Global Visibility" to have your training appear on the main Training Hub. A developer admin must approve this request.

20. External Registration URLs

If you handle registration through your own system, enter the external URL. Users will be directed there instead of the ETI registration flow.

▶ E. Content & Customization

21. Portal-Specific Branding

Your portal can have custom branding elements. Contact the platform administrator to set up custom logos, colors, or welcome messages.

22. Custom Pricing Configurations

Portals can have special pricing for Pro memberships or trainings. This is configured at the portal level by a developer admin.

23. Global vs. Portal Resources

Some content (like the core ETI assessment and roadmaps) is global. Other content (trainings, blog posts) can be portal-specific or marked for global visibility.

24. Blog Posts

Create blog posts that appear in your portal's Training Hub. Posts can be informational, promotional, or educational.

▶ F. Registrations & Transactions

25. Viewing Training Registrations

The Registrations tab lists all registrations for trainings in your portal. See participant name, email, training title, registration date, and payment status.

26. Managing Payment Status

33. Badges Management

View all badges in the system and manage user badge assignments. Award badges manually or revoke badges when needed. See which users have earned each badge.

34. Results Simulator
